A close look at the young Christian generation in Germany shows that many young Christians have strong friendships, people who encourage them spiritually and people they trust personally.
BUT: almost one in two struggles with anxiety. One in five with depression. Many are under massive pressure to be perfect, have self-doubt, feel lonely, even in our churches.
- Only 15 percent of those surveyed (nearly 1,000 young Christians in Germany) say that someone always believes in them.
- Only 12 percent feel very secure in their identity.
- And only 15 percent feel truly understood by their parents.
These numbers show: mental health isn’t just a “global” issue. It affects our teenagers, our groups and our churches in very concrete ways.
Mental health is an issue for Gen Z, and mental health has to be an issue for us too. (Kara Powell, Fuller Youth Institute, paraphrased)
What matters?
- Listen.
- Take the pressure off.
- Make room for real questions.
- And point to Jesus along the way, as the one who doesn’t overwhelm but heals and carries.
“The Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Peter 2:25 NIV): that’s Jesus. But you’re invited to care for your teenagers’ hearts together with him. You’re an important anchor in your teenagers’ lives. In real relationships. In listening.
