A website called Fight the New Drug has published a list titled “50 Good Reasons to Stop Watching Porn.” The article isn’t brand new (and some of the “reasons” repeat themselves a bit), but it’s a good example of the strong backlash against pornography that is becoming more and more mainstream. The movement even has prominent supporters like Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor.

“My issue was, and is, with pornography, that it changes the way you think about people. People become objects, people become body parts; they become things to be used rather than people to be loved.” (Terry Crews)

What drives the movement?

This backlash isn’t necessarily based on religious convictions. Instead, it’s fueled by the desire to protect young people from being abused and exploited as part of the sex industry, and by new scientific research showing that porn can, for example, destroy long-term relationships. Here are some of the reasons, according to the website, to stop watching porn or never start:

  • A better sex life and more realistic ideas about sex
  • Not supporting an exploitative system
  • More free time, more creativity, more productivity
  • Better, more stable relationships
  • Improved mental health

If you’re working to help your teenagers keep a pure mind and a pure heart, you’ll be glad to hear that this time the cultural momentum is on your side, as more and more people become aware of the destructive side effects of habitual porn use.
