## Icebreaker “The Domino Principle”

💡

Tip: If you have more time, you can build a different kind of chain reaction with your teenagers instead: Rube Goldberg style, with whatever the room offers.

Split the participants into groups and give each group a set of dominoes. Their task is to set up the dominoes so that, when pushed, they fall and end up setting a ball rolling.

❓

****What did it take to get the ball rolling?** (Fine-tuning, and the first domino had to be pushed.)

❓

****What happens if there is no first domino to start the chain? Can there be an infinite chain of dominoes? Why or why not?**

If there is no first domino, that means the chain of dominoes stretches back infinitely without ever having had a beginning. That would be hard to imagine, because it would mean there have always been dominoes falling, and there was never a beginning or an end.

Before we discuss what this has to do with the question “Who created God?”, let’s watch a video clip.

## Video clip

🎬 Watch the video “[The Kalam Cosmological Argument](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CulBuMCLg0&ref=thepulse.org)” (about 6 minutes).

❓

****Which argument or statement in the video surprised you the most, and why?**

❓

****Which argument or statement in the video spoke to you or made you think?**

❓

****Were there arguments in the video you agree or disagree with? Explain your perspective.**

❓

****If you could share one argument or statement from the video with a friend, which would it be and why?**

❓

****Did the video influence or change your personal beliefs in any way? If so, how?**

❓

****What question is still open for you that you’d like to explore further?**

## Going deeper

Two questions that keep coming up in the discussion about the cosmological argument are:

1. Why does God have to be the cause? Couldn’t the universe itself be the cause of everything else?
2. If everything has a cause, then who or what created God?

❓

****Based on the video, how would you answer these questions?**

**Question 1: Why does God have to be the cause? Couldn’t the universe itself be the cause of everything else?**

- **The second law of thermodynamics:** This physical law states that the usable energy in a closed system decreases over time and moves toward a state of maximum entropy (disorder). An eternal universe would already have reached a state of maximum entropy.
- **The expanding universe:** Scientific observations show that the universe is expanding. This points to a starting point where the expansion began.
- **The cosmic background radiation:** The cosmic background radiation is the radiation left over from the Big Bang, which can be observed throughout the universe. It serves as evidence for the Big Bang and therefore for the beginning of the universe.
- **Temperature ripples in the cosmic radiation:** These ripples or “seeds” tell us about the matter from which galaxies and galaxy clusters later formed. They are further evidence for the Big Bang and the origin of the universe.
- **Einstein’s theory of relativity:** Einstein’s theory shows that time, space and matter are interdependent and have an absolute beginning. It is one of the strongest pieces of scientific evidence for the beginning of the universe.

**Question 2: If everything has a cause, then who or what created God?**

As we just saw, there is evidence that our universe had a beginning. So something or someone outside the universe must be the cause. Many people believe that God is this cause. But then some ask, “So who made God?”

Science is based on the principle of causality, which says that everything that has a beginning must also have a cause. But that doesn’t mean everything must have a cause. Many believe that God has no beginning and therefore was not caused by anything else.

The counterargument goes: if God can be eternal, the universe can be eternal too. And here again we run into the scientific evidence showing that the universe is in fact not eternal. Therefore something outside the universe must be eternal and be the cause of the universe.

So there really are only two possibilities:

1. Either something has always existed, or
2. it had a beginning and was caused by something else.

Since the universe had a beginning, it must have been caused by something else.

This first cause has the following characteristics:

- it exists outside of time, space and matter,
- it is extremely powerful,
- intelligent, and
- personal.

This description resembles what many people call God. But this conclusion rests on scientific facts, not only on religious convictions. As Einstein said, “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

## Anchoring it in the Bible

📖 Read [Hebrews 11:1](https://www.bible.com/bible/111/HEB.11.1.NIV?ref=thepulse.org)

❓

****What do you think it means to be confident in what we hope for and assured about what we cannot see?**

❓

****Do you think this verse is about believing in God even without seeing him? Or more about taking bold steps even when the final goal is still invisible? (For example: Noah began building his ark although there was no sign of a flood yet. Abraham set out on a journey without knowing where he was going.)**

We may not be able to see God or prove him scientifically, but we can definitely grasp him. The clues we looked at today point to his existence.

Faith in God is not blind faith; it rests on the fact that we can know him. That starts with knowing his Word (the Bible) and believing his Word. And this faith is confirmed and becomes deep knowledge when we act on it by trusting Jesus as our Savior and Lord. That means faith in God can be experienced.

## Challenge

- Ask people around you who believe in God why they are Christians. What are their arguments?
- Ask people around you who aren’t Christians what their arguments against Christianity are.
