Nele (not her real name) was 13 when I met her. At her church, at school and in her after-school activities, she didn’t have any Christian friends her age. Together we started praying that she would find like-minded friends she could share her faith with. Four years later, Nele is surrounded by friends who follow Jesus. They meet at church, at school and in their free time, pray for each other and encourage one another. For the past year, Nele has been leading a school Bible club (called a Schülerbibelkreis in Germany) at her school. Through it, one of her classmates has already come to faith in Jesus, and others have started out on the journey of getting to know Jesus. That’s how she encourages other teenagers in the youth group, too, to be a light right where they are.

[****What is a school Bible club?**](https://www.smd.org/schueler-smd/sbk/was-ist-ein-sbk?ref=thepulse.org) (in German)
In short, a school Bible club (in Germany: Schülerbibelkreis, or SBK) is a group of students who make room for God in their everyday school life. A school Bible club can look very different from one school to the next. Some read the Bible or pray together. Others discuss difficult questions of faith or topics like evolution vs. creation. And there are groups that come up with ways to share God’s love in a very practical way at school: for example, by handing out cake or thanking the custodial staff.

Every youth group has students who live both in the “church bubble” and at school. They spend many hours at school, but they’re probably grateful when someone genuinely asks how they’re doing and encourages them at church to connect their two worlds, church and school.

My prayer is that there will be a school Bible club at every school in my city, because I’m convinced that where young Christians live out their school day with Jesus, more and more young people will get to know Jesus and grow in their faith. And every youth group benefits when its teenagers are involved in a school Bible club.

## Three benefits of a school Bible club

1. **Faith in everyday life:** School Bible clubs give teenagers the chance to live out their faith where they spend most of their time. These small groups, often led by students themselves, offer a unique platform where teenagers learn to live their faith in an authentic and relevant way. A place right in the middle of school where they experience spiritual growth and an encouraging community.
2. **Building leadership skills:** Leading a school Bible club gives teenagers a valuable opportunity to develop their leadership skills. These range from organizational tasks like planning meetings to people skills like building relationships and resolving conflicts. Teenagers who are active in roles like these often experience faster spiritual and personal growth, because they aren’t only receiving spiritual content but passing it on, too.
3. **Peer-to-peer evangelism:** A third important benefit of school Bible clubs is peer-to-peer evangelism. When teenagers see other teenagers standing up for their faith, it can inspire them too. This creates a positive environment where questions of faith can be discussed openly, which helps teenagers understand and deepen their faith. In this way, school Bible clubs can become a catalyst for spiritual revival and deeper faith among the students.

## How can you support and encourage your teenagers to live their school day with Jesus?

- **Do “Shift Your Ground” with your youth group.** Three concepts for your youth group that help teenagers see their everyday lives from God’s perspective in a whole new way. (A curriculum in German from Schüler-SMD, the school branch of SMD, a German network of Christians in schools, universities and the workplace.)
- **Invite the** [regional staff member](https://www.smd.org/kontakt/schueler-smd?ref=thepulse.org) **of Schüler-SMD in your area to your youth group** (in German). Their experience and knowledge can really help your youth group.
- **Support active and aspiring school Bible club leaders.** Maybe you can even visit a school Bible club yourself sometime.

## Your teenagers want to start a school Bible club. How can you help?

- Connect your teenagers with the [regional staff member](https://www.smd.org/kontakt/schueler-smd?ref=thepulse.org) in your area (in German).
- Look around the [Schüler-SMD website](https://www.smd.org/schueler-smd/?ref=thepulse.org) together (in German).
- In the [frequently asked questions](https://www.smd.org/schueler-smd/sbk/faq?ref=thepulse.org), you’ll find some valuable first answers (in German).
- The [“aha” booklet “Start-Up”](https://www.smd.org/fileadmin/3%5FSCHUELER/3b%5FSBK/aha-Startup.pdf?ref=thepulse.org) and the [SBK planning tool](https://www.smd.org/schueler-smd/sbk/sbk-leiten/notion?ref=thepulse.org) on Notion give you a thorough look at concrete next steps (both in German).
- Outside Germany, look for an organization that supports student-led clubs where you live. In the US, for example, [First Priority](https://www.firstpriority.org/?ref=thepulse.org) trains student leaders to start Christian clubs at public middle and high schools.
